John, Rod Allen and Sandy Newman

Hello Everybody,
Welcome to my first newsletter of 2008. The sad news reached us in January of the death of that great singer and musician Rod Allen of The Fortunes. Pictured with myself are Rod and Sandy Newman of The Marmalade during the tour that we did together in Sweden in 2006. This was the first time that I had the pleasure of meeting Rod. He made me feel very much at home with himself and the band. Rod's demise is another great loss to the world of music and I know that all of us pass on our thoughts to his wife Margaret and all the family.

Also one of the heroes of World War 2 and a POW at Stalag Luft 111, Jimmy James, has recently died at the age of 91. Jimmy was a real great escaper and I was most fortunate to have met him on several occasions. I found him to be a friendly and relaxing man. It was a pleasure to be in his company. Again our thoughts are with Jimmy's family.

Beryl's birthday cakeOn a happier note one of my long- term fans, well she has been since the age of 13, Beryl Moore, celebrated her 60th birthday in January. As a special treat her birthday cake is I think best described as a 'Johnny Remember Me' tribute cake. Now that would be a novel line in merchandise. A big thank you to her friend Tina for sending in the picture.

It can't 'escaped' many of us that the Christmas and New Year season on TV featured some of the films that I have appeared in. Not only the annual showing of 'The Great Escape' but 'Von Ryan's Express' , 'Krakatoa - East of Java' and 'The Square Peg'. Whilst on the subject of my film and TV appearances, yet more appearances that I made have come to light. Whilst at drama school I was an extra in the motion picture 'The Devil's Disciple'. Filmed at Elstree studios in 1959 and starring Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier. I was dressed in period costume, yes me in tights and that's a first! Also a big thanks to Tony Clapson who reminded me that I also appeared in a documentary film titled 'Get the Picture', a documentary produced in 1979 about disability in the workplace. He also informed me that in August 1963 I made an appearance in the ITV music show ' Holiday Music'.

Currently 2 films are being produced about the late Joe Meek. 'Telstar - The Movie' in which I have a cameo role as Sir Edward Lewis and a documentary produced by Susan Stahman and Howard Berger titled ' A Life In The Death Of Joe Meek'. I was interviewed for the latter in February 2007. Its first UK screening is on Sunday 24th February at 6.30 p.m. at the Glasgow Film Festival and is being introduced by our good friend John Cavanagh. Ticket details at www.gft.org.uk. Great Western Themes Peter Williams
Our Lone Rider Record Company has recently released Peter's latest guitar instrumental CD. Titled 'Lone Rider - Great TV & Movie Western Themes' it really is a must for those of you who enjoy watching Westerns at the cinema or on TV. What is most unusual is that the CD contains many themes from TV Western series that have never been recorded before. With the assistance of Peter's great friend in the USA, western expert, Doug Abbott these long lost themes have now been made available for the first time. It really is an excellent CD and is available from our website shop. Peter is the Spotlight UK artiste on UK Country Radio during the weekend of 22nd-24th February.

Small Town Saturday Night.
Trevor Simpson has written and just published a book titled 'Small Town Saturday Night' - Pop Music Memories of Halifax in the Sixties Vol 1'. The proceeds from the sale of the book all go to the Calderdale Hospital Radio Charity. Many years ago Trevor interviewed Clem Cattini and myself for his Hospital Radio show. Many books are currently available on the 60's music scene but Trevor's book is something quite special. It is a real labour of love, 192 pages printed on high quality paper and packed with incredible memorabilia of interest to any 60's music fan. With it's previously unpublished pictures of many of the artistes that appeared in Halifax in the 60's it really is a unique book. It contains previously unpublished pictures of Billy Fury (in colour), myself, The Beatles, Cliff Richard and The Shadows, Dusty Springfield etc. Trevor has now commenced a Vol 2 that he has asked us to assist with. Full ordering details are available at

Mike Quinn - Blast FM.
During December I was interviewed 'live' on Mike's Tuesday p.m. show. I really enjoyed the interview and Mike and the many guests that filled the studio made me feel most welcome. The event was filmed and we hope to put up on the 'youtube' website an edited version of the interview. Many thanks for your support Mike.

John with SOFFIAIn September I attended the 18th International Fantastic Film event in Manchester. Many thanks to Gill Lane-Young for inviting me and sending me some photographs of the event that we have put on the Gallery page of the website. We have also taken this opportunity to put up some more items of memorabilia on the Fans Page that some of you have sent to us.

And finally...
Craig Douglas That great music business legend and personal friend Craig Douglas is now celebrating his 50th Anniversary in the music business. Many congratulations to Craig, a really excellent singer and show business personality. As a small tribute to Craig we have put his biography up on the website .

Always yours.
