John at Christmas

Hello Everyone,
Welcome to my December/January Newsletter.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you, your families and friends a very happy and great Christmas and a happy New Year.
Peter Williams In keeping with the Christmas spirit guitarist Peter Williams has recorded instrumental versions of those great Christmas songs ‘A Winters Tale’ and ‘White Christmas’ which have been added to the website’s ‘JukeBox’.

On Saturday 15th December at 10.30a.m. ‘Pop in Translation’ is being broadcast. The programme features an interview that I recently recorded with John Cavanagh discussing my foreign language recordings. The programme will also be available for up to 7 days from transmission on the ‘Listen Again’ facility on the BBC’s website. If my memory serves me correctly I recorded 6 ‘foreign’ language versions of my original 60’s tracks. ‘Son This Is She’ was recorded in both French and German, ‘The Girl On The Floor Above’ and ‘Terry Brown’s In Love With Mary Dee’ in Italian and ‘The Great Escape’ and ‘I’ll Cut Your Tail Off’ were also recorded in German.
These versions of ‘Son This Is She’, ‘The Girl On The Floor Above’ and ‘Terry Brown’s In Love With Mary Dee’ were recorded by Joe Meek at Holloway Road. Joe overdubbing my voice onto backings that had been previously arranged by Charles Blackwell. Whilst ‘Son This Is She’ was released in Germany the French version and the two Italian tracks were to my knowledge never officially released. Son this is she However we have been fortunate to obtain copies of them with both foreign language versions of ‘Son This Is She’ having been recorded in stereo. The German language versions of ‘The Great Escape’ and ‘I’ll Cut Your Tail Off’ were recorded at EMI studios shortly after I had left Joe Meek. Robert Stigwood and Charles Blackwell being responsible for their production.
A ‘foreign’ language version of ‘Son This Is She’ is available on the CD Boxset ‘Joe Meek Portrait of a Genius’ and all three German language tracks are available on the Bear Family CD ‘1000 Nadelstiche’. At some future stage we hope to make available my Italian tracks.

On Tuesday 11th December at 2p.m. I am being interviewed by Mike Quinn for his Blast 1386 programme. You can hear the programme by logging into Mike’s website. Mike is also planning to film the interview for possible future showing on the youtube website.
